Teamwork Creates Champions: the Kentucky Meeting: March 13-16, 2014

Come to Louisville for our 2014 Kentucky Meeting March 13-16 and watch as your dental team members become champions!  We have assembled an abundance of speakers who want to help mold your crew into a lean mean dental team.  In addition, our vast array of featured speakers were chosen to exhilarate and educate CE-seeking dentists from Kentucky and beyond!

Courses Tailored for your Staff

Since our theme this year is Teamwork Creates Champions, we will begin with an overview of courses we are offering for team members…

This year, you will find a wide variety of courses tailored to your office staff.  From Caries Management by Risk Assessment to infection control to accounts receivable and ultrasonic debridement, there is literally something for everyone.

On Friday morning, Atlanta’s Rhonda Mullins will inspire, motivate and provide your staff with new leadership and relationship-building skills, while Dr. V. Kim Kutsch will provide a caries science update with his course titled, “Implementing CAMBRA (Caries Management by Risk Assessment) Made Simple”.  Dr. Kutsch’s approach to understanding and dealing with the oral biofilm is unique and refreshing, and his psychological approach to motivating patients will change the way you educate your patients.  Susan Grammer presents the much-needed course, “Radiation Safety for Dental Auxiliaries”.  In addition, Patty Bonasso Byrd will refresh everyone with her presentation of “OSHA and Infection Control for Dentistry 2014”, and Cynthia Fong’s workshop titled, “Straightforward Ultrasonic Debridement” will provide you and your hygienist with everything they need to know when utilizing ultrasonic devices to treat periodontal disease.

As the day progresses, Dr. George Kushner will present to you and your staff two of his staple courses titled respectively, “Bisphosphonates, Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (ONJ) and Dentistry – Where Are We Now and What do We Know?” and the ever-popular “Complications in Dentistry”.  In addition, Dr. Tanya Brown will help you and your staff “Make Your Practice a Masterpiece” by showing you the way to making your team more focused, more efficient and productive and therefore more fun!

Friday afternoon, Dr. Kutsch will repeat his course on CAMBRA and Cynthia Fong will enlighten us all with “A Simplified Approach to Ultrasonic Instrumentation”, which is also one of our hands-on courses.

Saturday morning will bring Angie Currans and her presentation titled, “Having a Healthy Balance with Your Accounts Receivable”.  Angie says on her website, “Don't let your revenue disappear ... put it in the bank!” and she means it, too!  And then, Dr. Tanya Brown will present another team-building course, “Train a Winning Team”.  In this course, Dr. Brown shares the “fundamentals to effectively develop a winning team. It takes everyone on the team to be ‘Leaders at All Levels’. Learn how to get the right people in the right positions and watch them grow!”

Then, of course, on Sunday morning at the Hyatt, Dr. George Kushner will be there to present his very popular “Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office”, and Patty Bonasso Byrd will enlighten us all about the truly devastating effects that Meth and Illegal Drugs have on the Oral Cavity.

Our Featured Speakers

This year, our list of featured speakers begins with Dr. Ray Bertolotti, who is making a rare appearance from the west coast, just for us! During his course titled, “The New Dentistry: Vital Elements for Clinical Success”, Dr. Bertolotti shares with us what is new in Adhesion Dentistry, ideal preps and bonding technique that is used all over the world.
Dr. Bertolotti has agreed to come to Louisville as our keynote speaker for an all-day presentation on Thursday and he is donating his time and paying his own expenses, so that all ticket sales for his presentation can be donated to the Kentucky Dental Foundation.  Those funds will be used to sponsor a future RAM (Remote Area Medical) event in Kentucky.

Dr. Bertolotti is best known for introducing “total etch” to North America in 1984.  He also introduced Panavia in 1985, tin plating in 1989, self-etching primers in 1992 and HealOzone in 2004. The sectional Contact Matrix system, "MicroPrime", "MicroEtcher" sandblasting and intraoral tin-plating are also his innovations. He is a well-known international lecturer, having presented invited lectures in over 30 countries.

All day Friday, Dr. Steve Rasner will present “Simplified Oral Surgical Procedures for the General Dentist”, a course that offers step-by-step protocols for a wide array of oral surgical procedures condensed into the most safe and predictable oral surgical services for the general practice. Enhance your hard and soft tissue esthetics as well as add significant productivity to your office.

Dr. Rasner will join us from his home state of New Jersey, where he practices general dentistry.  Speaking with passionate, original delivery, Dr. Rasner challenges, inspires, and shares the same principles and practices that he used and still uses to build and manage one of the top dental practices in the country.

In another all-day course on Friday, we will find out “What’s Hot and What’s Getting Hotter!!” And, Dr. Howard Glazer is going to be the person to tell us!  Dr. Glazer will present a potpourri of materials and techniques that will make your day at the office easier, more productive and fun! Your entire dental team will benefit from learning about the latest products and benefits provided for you and your patients.

In addition, Dr. Joe Blaes from Dental Economics magazine presents his well-known “Great New Products for Your Practice in 2014”, which is also a hands-on workshop. This course is a perennial favorite!

Dr. Barry Musikant will educate us with his presentation titled, “Fearless Single Visit Endodontics”.  This Power Point lecture is designed for the general practitioner and specialist and includes alternatives to rotary NiTi and traditional techniques that are safer, more time efficient and far less costly. We will learn how to perform single visit endodontics without the fear of instrument separation.

On Friday afternoon, Dr. Alan Budenz will present his course “CARIES DISEASE: What It Is and What to Do about It”.  Dr. Budenz is professor and vice chair of Diagnostic Sciences and Services at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in SanFrancisco, CA and has more than 30 years of general practice experience.

Non-Members Attend for $150!

KDA member dentists will again be able to sponsor a non-member for the meeting.  Any KDA member may bring a non-member dentist friend to the meeting one time only for a $150 registration fee.  This is an $850.00 savings for a non-member! And if their guest decides to join the KDA, 100% of their registration fee will be applied to their annual dues. Is this still good for this year?

Drink Wine! Eat Cheese! See & Purchase Cool Dental Products & Services! Watch Hoops!

We have a lot of activity in our Exhibit Hall on Friday night, so come and eat, drink, support our exhibitors, visit and be happy! And maybe watch some basketball! The event is from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on the exhibit floor. Our meeting exhibitors would love for you to visit and patronize their booths. Dental students will be anxiously awaiting the arrival of member dentists who may need associates or who just want to socialize, mentor and give a few helpful tips. And, since our meeting is likely to overlap some college conference post-season tournaments, we will provide big screen televisions so you don’t miss any action throughout the meeting!

MEET & GREET Networking Reception for Dental Students and Dentists!

Students who are interested in associateships or buying practices will be traveling from both UKCD and ULSD to attend this event, which was very successful last year.

Dentists who might be looking for new associates or to sell their practice and students who are looking to buy a practice, become an associate or who are just looking for some words of wisdom are all invited to attend this reception, which will convene near the UKCD and ULSD booths (#s 607 & 605, respectively) in the rear of the exhibit hall from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. during the Wine & Cheese Reception.  Dentists, please make some time in your busy schedules to participate!

This event is FREE to both students and dentists and we encourage EVERYONE to attend! If you have any questions at all, contact Dr. Lindsey Willoughby and she can answer your questions. Email her at Lindsey.willoughby.dmd@gmail.com.

Learn how to Properly Maintain your Equipment

Our well-liked course about dental equipment maintenance and minor repairs will be taught by technicians from Patterson Dental, Henry Schein and Nashville Dental.  The three-hour course will be helpful for both dentists and staff to keep down maintenance costs in the dental office.   Participants will spend thirty minutes each at six stations to learn skills to keep office equipment running predictably and save on repair bills.

Marcus Randall Dinner on Thursday Evening

The Marcus Randall Dinner will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening in the Regency Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Hotel.  Dr. Steve Rasner will be our featured speaker. A general practitioner, Dr. Rasner achieved his success and continues to practice full-time in the town of Bridgeton, NJ.  He understands the issues that practices face and brings refreshing realism and rich daily experience to every presentation.  At our dinner, Dr. Rasner will offer some suggestions about how we might address some of life’s challenges.  “Every one of us faces obstacles in our life. These come at us in the form of emotional, financial, legal or health issues.  If you don't know how to defeat them, they will get in the way of who you could become.”  This type of advice sounds like something we could all put to good use!  Dr. Rasner is also a scheduled speaker on our Friday program.

In addition to dinner and Dr. Rasner, our 50 Year Club Awards, Presidential Citation Awards and Fellowship Awards will be presented. This is an event you won’t want to miss!

See our Hands-on Courses

On Friday morning, Dr. Tom McDonald, whose practice is located in Athens, GA, will present his hands-on course titled, “Temporary Fabrication”.  Dr. McDonald lectures frequently throughout the country in the areas of restorative dentistry, esthetics and occlusion. In the afternoon, he will also present his course on Occlusion.

Mr. Robert Mopper of Chicago, IL will be presenting a lecture titled “Repairing Porcelain Crowns”.  Mentioned in a previous year, but worth noting again is the fact that Mr. Mopper is the son of Cosmedent founder Dr. Buddy Mopper.  Robert has seventeen formal years’ experience in dentistry, but his experience started as a child as he watched his father’s slides regularly on cosmetic dentistry.  Robert has lectured worldwide, including at trade shows across the US and Canada, and currently teaches dentists about the newest and most effective methods for making both composite and porcelain look more lifelike and natural.  In his job at Cosmedent, he offers technical assistance to practicing cosmetic dentists on techniques and materials, and he also assists independent clinicians with their hands-on programs throughout the country.

In addition, as mentioned elsewhere in this article, there are several other speakers who will be presenting hands-on courses, including, Ms. Cynthia Fong, who will teach us about “A Simplified Approach to Ultrasonic Instrumentation”, and Dr. Joe Blaes of Dental Economics, who will present “Great New Products for Your Practice in 2014”.

The Kentucky Connection

On Saturday afternoon, our own Dr. Mark Nation will present his course titled, “Dental Implants: What We Knew, What We Know and What We Think We Should Know”.  Dr. Nation practices in Louisville with his wife, Dr. Karen Nation.  In 2003, Dr. Nation completed a three-year fixed, implant and removable prosthodontic program.  He is Board Certified in Kentucky and lectures frequently on occlusion, implants and digital diagnostics.

Dr. John McCrillis will present, “Oral Appliances for Obstructive Sleep Apnea: What’s Happening in 2014?” Dr. McCrillis, also of Louisville, is the first dentist in Kentucky credentialed by the Certification Board of the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine in providing oral appliances for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

Invisalign® Workshops I and II

These one-day courses are designed specifically for the general practitioner and team members who wish to incorporate the Invisalign® system into their practice. This case based training provides participants with the clinical and operational confidence to successfully treat a range of highly predictable cases.

In addition to providing your entire team with essential clinical, operational and marketing skills, the course presents a full range of support resources specifically designed to meet the needs of the non-orthodontic practice.

So, you see, there is no excuse not to attend and bring your whole team, when we have made it so convenient to get the CE you and your staff need. And, we have done all the legwork to bring you the best speakers presenting on the most asked-for subjects, making it so easy for you to want to learn!

Botox and Dermal Filler Course

New this year is the addition of our Botox and Dermal Filler course.  Two full days of instruction on these techniques will have you proficient in their administration.  This is a hands-on course and you will have the opportunity to use these materials first hand on a person of your choosing

Building a Modern Web Presence

New developments re-shape the online space every day, and that means the internet moves fast. Is your practice keeping up? In his course, “Building a Modern Web Presence”,Dr. Rich Hirschinger breaks down the latest developments in the dental Web Presence industry. From websites and mobile websites, to search engine optimization (SEO), to social media, to reputation monitoring, and even online patient education, this presentation will bring the news that will keep your practice ahead of the pack in 2014. If you see one Web presentation this year, make sure this is the one!
