So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Adieu
This has been a busy year and one I will forever cherish and remember. I am humbled to have had the privilege and pleasure to serve and represent you as president of our great organization. The past year has brought challenging work. When I sat down the other day and listed what has been accomplished by the KDA, I was astounded. Before I go any further, let me make it clear that these highlights have been a collective effort by your leadership, your staff, your Executive Board, your lobbying firm, the Board of Dentistry and by each of you. No one person can be singled out. The motto of our great Commonwealth rings true for the KDA, “United We Stand, Divided We Fall”.
As we get older we tend to look back on our lives, savoring highlights and often wishing to relive some of them. I am sure we can all agree that our greatest memories include graduation from dental school, marriage and the birth of our children. For some there are the added highlights of retirement and the joy of grandchildren. We are a blessed profession and a blessed people. I hope you echo my sentiments and daily give thanks to God for everything we are able to enjoy.
Last year I hit the big 60. That, in itself, seems hard to imagine but, after creeping to my rocker, I used it as a time of reflection. My KDA presidency, as well as the opportunity to serve several years on the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention has helped me to grow, both, professionally and personally. Working so closely with a service organization, one begins to see what really goes on behind the scenes. It gives a greater appreciation and respect for the staff, the leadership and the membership. My view of the KDA is one of pride. We experience the same problems that all state dental associations face. However, after attending the President Elect’s Conference in Chicago last year, I came away with the assurance that one thing that separates the KDA from other states is our resolve. We have a resolve to not be complacent and live in the past. We have a resolve to tackle problems, even with a limited budget. We have a resolve to continue to strive for the betterment of our organization, our profession and ourselves. Truly, our best days are ahead. Your subsequent leadership shares this vision and I ask that you assist them in every endeavor. The sky is the limit for the KDA.
Let’s see what has happened in your KDA over the last twelve months:
1. Passage of our Non-Covered Services Bill as part of HB479 after three years of work.
2. Streamlining Executive Board Meetings through early submission of reports.
3. Successful goal of raising money through KDPAC.
4. Updating and revamping the KD Foundation and the addition of two non-dentists as members.
5. Ongoing contact with the Department of Medicaid Services with the intent to have the KDA play a majority role in administering the dental Medicaid portion.
6. Formation of a committee to respond to the possibility of a private dental school in Pikeville.
7. Restructuring of the KDA Vice Presidents to begin leadership two years out, instead of one.
8. Lobbying to obtain a three-day exemption for Schedule III narcotics under HB1.
9. Favorable regulations by the Kentucky Board of Dentistry in the implementation of HB1.
10. Providing assistance in the restructuring of a KDA component society, including the KDA sponsorship of a free CE course.
11. Renewed relationship with the Board of Dentistry and its new director.
12. Enactment of a monthly credit card dues payment program.
13. Placement of a dentist on the Health Care Exchange and placement of the KDA Executive Director on one of the Exchange’s subcommittees.
14. Identified six new members from which to choose for KDA Annual Session Scientific Chairs.
15. Expanded the Exhibit Hall for the first time in a decade.
16. Increased attendance at the Annual Meeting after a five-year decline.
17. Implemented a networking program for junior and senior dental students with prospective retiring dentists as part of the wine and cheese party.
18. Procurement of additional funds from the ADA for the new dentist program.
19. Procurement of SPA monies from the ADA for PR work in helping to defend dentistry in the legal fight for the recoupment of monies from oral surgeons in the Medicaid system.
20. Hired new lobbyists, McCarthy Strategic Solution, and the implemented bi-weekly conference calls with the Executive Director and the KDA President.
21. Total membership increased by three last year, but we need to concentrate on also increasing our paying membership, which decreased.
In closing, I am reminded of a question we all have during reflective times: Could I have done more? A better question might be: Did I do the best I could in the time I was given? For this question I can say yes. I have a quote on my desk from Dwight L. Moody. It reads, "Be Prayerful for Everything and Thankful for Anything." Today, I am thankful to have served as your president these past twelve months.
