The KDA welcomes Rex Chapman as our keynote speaker this year. Rex is an Owensboro native and played two years with the University of Kentucky Wildcats and twelve years in the National Basketball Association. Currently living in Lexington, Rex can be found on several media outlets giving colorful commentary on UK Basketball. Rex is a very entertaining speaker who has a personal story he’s willing to share that you won’t want to miss!

During Dr. Farran’s podcasts, he interviews folks in a live environment. On Friday night, after the ULSD and UKCD Alumni Receptions, the New Dentist Committee will host a fun social event for new dentists, which are dentists who have been out of school for ten years or less. All Fourth Year Dental Students are invited to attend, as well. It will be necessary to RSVP (See below). Al J's at the Conservatory is located in the Galt House and was voted best place to "sit and drink." Grab a bite or beverage at the 30-foot aquarium bar, offering sweeping views of downtown and the waterfront.
More details will be provided to students at a later date. In past years, this has been a very well-attended activity, so make time to attend! The fun will begin at 10:00 p.m. and last until Midnight.

Participate in Our Table Clinic & Hobby Show!
You are invited to participate in the annual Table Clinic and Hobby Show for the 2019 Kentucky Meeting to be held on Saturday, August 17, 2019 in the Grand Hall/Foyer area outside the Grand Ballroom on the second floor of the Galt House East Hotel.
The Kentucky Dental Association will offer three separate clinic areas. One area is reserved for clinical clinics and information, the second area is for hobbies and crafts only and the third is for research clinics. Let’s work together to make this the best year ever! There are cash awards for each area (clinical, hobby and research).
And, Again, This Year! Cash Awards will be given out in three separate categories just for Hygienists and Hygiene Students!
Calling All KDA Members
Is there a speaker on our program that you've wanted to meet? We are looking for those members interested in meeting, greeting and introducing the wonderful speakers we have on our program. We offer any paid course at no charge for the person who introduces the speaker for that course. Some exceptions may apply. Call for details.
Duties include arriving early to the course to hand out information to the attendees. Once the course is ready to begin, introduce the speaker. During the presentation, be available to attend to the needs of the speaker should any arise and enjoy the course. At the end, provide the course code numbers for the attendees to obtain CE credit and collect the CE cards. These cards are then returned to the registration desk on second floor of the Galt House East Hotel.

Friday Courses – So many Choices!
Begin your Friday morning with Dr. Jeffrey Osborne and his course “Successful Oral Sleep Devices: The Past, the Present and the Future”. This program will provide Updates on Oral Devices: tips, news and a little science.
Or join Dr. James Braun for “Keep the Root and Build Up: You're Better Off”. This course will explore the advantages of preserving teeth that have had endo but are compromised. There are so many benefits of maintaining root structure and placement of a foundation and subsequent crown.
Dr. Timothy Bizga will present “Designed for Accomplishment, Engineered for Success: How What We Do, Use and Think About Affect Our Daily Practice”. Those in search of riches know that one must move a lot of dirt in order to find a little bit of gold. This course is designed to sift through the “dirt”, providing informational “gold” on a variety of dental topics essential to seeing long term success!
Dr. Gary Radz will discuss “Tips, Tricks & Techniques for the Esthetic Based General Dentist”. Dentistry now has a wide variety of new materials and technologies available to help dentists provide better dentistry faster and more predictably. This fast-paced program is designed to share many useful materials now available as well as the tips and techniques to add speed and predictability.
Then, Kyle Isaacs will teach us about “Working Smarter - Silver Diamine Fluoride and Glass Ionomer Cements…The Wave of Treating Caries is Here!” With real life case presentations, lively conversation and dramatic photo documentation Kyle will share her expertise and success of using silver diamine fluoride in a variety of dental settings.
And, Dr. Joe Blaes will show us “Great Products for Your Practice”, both Friday morning and afternoon. This exciting products, techniques and strategies workshop presents the features and benefits that will change your practice.
Jocelyn Coupal will present “The Role of the Dental Professional When Family Abuse is Suspected: An Ethical Dilemma”. Family abuse is a global problem, but it touches every one of us either directly or indirectly. If we accept that each member of the dental team does have a role to play, the challenge is in knowing how we can help our patients.
And Dr. Jim Grisdale will warn us about “The Dark Side of Implants: Complications, Diagnosis & Management”.
Dr. Fiona Collins will then present “Dry Mouth: Etiology, Complications and Management & Management of Pre- and Post-procedural Pain”. This presentation begins with a review of the prevalence and etiology of dry mouth, and its role as a risk factor for oral diseases and conditions.
And, for hygienists only, attend our popular Preventative Products Roundtable Luncheon. Representatives from the leading preventative products companies will participate in this interactive session where attendees will be seated at tables for lunch and company representatives will travel the room spending time at each table describing their newest materials and answering dental hygienists’ questions.
On Friday afternoon, one of our favs, Dr. George Kushner will present “Bisphosphonates, Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (ONJ) and Dentistry - Where Are We Now and What Do We Know?”
Kyle Issacs and Jennifer Hasch will present “On the Move: Delivering Dental Care to Those in Need!” With real life case presentations, lively conversation and dramatic photo documentation this course will share the expertise of Kyle Isaacs, RDHEP, BHS, founder of Miles2Smiles and their experience of traversing the world of mobile dental hygiene and Jennifer Hasch, RDH BS, Dental Services Manager of Shawnee Christian Healthcare Center.
In his course, “The Best Options for Your Patients: Lab Cad-Cam Crowns”, Dr. James Braun will identify ceramic options and how to work with your lab for ultimate success.
Dr. Timothy Bizga will then teach us about “Effective Assisting”. This dental assisting continuing education course is designed to teach dental assistants and EFDA’s the skills necessary to better support their dentists in the everyday routines associated with a general dental practice.
In today’s digital world, data security is essential to every dental practice and his course, “Cybercrime in Dentistry: How Real is the Threat?”, Fred Sagester will discuss the potential types of cyber security threats that your office must protect itself against, why healthcare data is so valuable to hackers and how doctors can protect their data and their practice.
Then, Friday afternoon, Dr. Grisdale will present two additional courses, “Key Essentials for Successful Bone Grafting, Techniques for Socket Preservation and Augmentation for Implants and Restorative Dentistry: The Basics and Future Trends” and “Predictable Bone Grafting for Site Preparation for Implants & Restorative Dentistry: A Workshop”.
Next, Dr. George Kushner gives us “Complications in Dentistry”. By studying possible complications, we can hopefully decrease the potential complication rate in our own patient population.
And Dr. Radz will talk about “Elective, Cosmetic Dentistry for Adolescents & Young Adults”. This half-day lecture discusses the materials and techniques that can allow a dentist to predictably use very conservative techniques to create beautiful smiles for young people.
Dr. Pamela Stein-VanArsdell will teach us about “Foods That Fight Oral Cancer (and other cancers too): Evidence Based Eating for Cancer Prevention”. Research suggests that nearly 70% of all cancers are potentially preventable and related to our lifestyles with 30% of cancers attributed to dietary factors.
And, finally, Jocelyn Coupal will present her afternoon version of “The Role of the Dental Professional When Family Abuse is Suspected: An Ethical Dilemma”.
Make Your Saturday Schedule Productive!
First up on Saturday morning, Dr. Brittany Camenisch and her course, “New Updates in Periodontal Diagnosis”
Next, Dr. Pamela Stein-VanArsdell will again teach us about “Foods That Fight Oral Cancer (and other cancers too): Evidence Based Eating for Cancer Prevention”.
Jack Hadley will give us some advice on how to “Grow Your Practice Using Social Media Marketing”. Progressive practices use social media marketing to attract new patients, raise top-of-mind awareness and referrals, decrease attrition, increase case acceptance and strengthen patient relationships.
Hernan Veras will show us how to create an “Effective Case Presentation to Get Case Acceptance Every Time”.
Allyson Taylor will educate us about “Human Trafficking: Street Signs and Recruitment Methods”. Human trafficking is occurring in every community in Kentucky but often goes unrecognized because of misconceptions held by those in a position to interact with and assist trafficking victims. This presentation focuses on dispelling those myths and giving attendees insight into how traffickers recruit victims and how those victims may present in daily life.
In his course, “Mission Based Dentistry - An Out of Office Experience!”, Dr. Joseph Jacobi will introduce us to a different mode of practice - that of mission-based dentistry to relieve pain and suffering. Mission trips in both the U.S. and overseas will be discussed as well as working with secular and faith-based organizations.
Then, Dr. Jerry Caudill will provide his Medicaid update in “Navigating Kentucky Medicaid 2019: The Path Forward”. Kentucky Medicaid for dentists continues its evolving path. This course will explore the trail forward touching on multiple subjects and questions including: How to Obtain a MAID, Credentialing, Opioids, Diabetes, 1115 Waiver, SDF, Mobile/Portable units and IV Moderate Sedation. Come join us on our journey into the future.
Mr. Andy Reynolds and Mr. Frank Yozwiak will prepare us for what comes next in their course, “Preparing for Retirement? Five Action Items to Help you Achieve your Goals”.
Want to learn about insurance? Then Dr. Terry Norris’ course “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Dental Insurance but Did Not Know Who to Ask” is for you!
Justin Perron with Commonwealth Technology will teach us about “Protecting Your Practice from External and Internal Threats – HIPAA Compliance & Cybersecurity”. In this session, we will discuss how to mitigate risk from external and internal threats and how that ties into your cybersecurity strategy.
Jack Hadley will show you how to “Help New Patients Find YOU Through Social Media”. Come learn what effective social media marketing is, and isn’t, for a dental practice.
“I’ve Found This Lesion…Now What?” This session will be a two-hour clinical pathologic conference applicable to all members of the dental team. Drs. George Kushner, Brian Shumway and Bruno Azevedo round out the instructor team.
Patty Bonasso Byrd will give us the lowdown on “OSHA and Infection Control in the Dental Office 2019”.
And finally, “Behavioral Finance - Why Do Investors Act Irrationally and What can You do About It?” Mr. Andy Reynolds and Mr. Frank Yozwiak will tell us why in their second course of the day!
Dependable Sunday!
Sunday will bring our staple courses, “Basic Life Support-BLS Healthcare Provider Training” with our popular instructor, Mr. Dewayne Livers and Dr. George Kushner’s “Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office”.
In addition, Patty Byrd will present, “Recognizing Drug Abuse in Dental Patients and KASPER Update 2019”. Drug abuse is a major health problem in America and impacts every dental practice as well as our families. Dental professionals can play a huge role in drug abuse identification, prevention and intervention. Emphasis will be placed on increasing your skills and abilities to recognize the signs and symptoms of drug abuse, refer suspected drug abusers for help and treat recovering patients in your practice. This course satisfies the KBOD’s HB 1 KASPER requirement.
