Course Description: Grade C periodontitis (previously termed Aggressive Periodontitis) is a rare and rapidly progressing form of periodontitis which is often characterized by early age of onset and a family aggregation. Due to the severe nature of this disease, it is thought to be associated with the presence of a highly virulent microbial flora and a high level of subject susceptibility. The objectives of our studies are to define immunological mechanisms, genetic susceptibility and bacterial profile associations with the localized form of grade C periodontitis disease, now named molar incisor pattern (C/MIP), and its response to treatment.

Our studies so far have shown that C/MIP patients exhibit a hyper-inflammatory response when exposed to bacterial antigens and that healthy siblings also respond to bacteria with a heightened inflammatory response when compared to healthy controls. The microbial profile studies in this population so far indicate a strong association of C/MIP with Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), as well as Filifactor alocis. Our more recent data analysis have shown a different genetic, inflammatory and microbiological profile depending on disease distribution, gender and race.Educational/Learning Objectives (2-5 objectives that are measurable)

Define unique clinical characteristics regarding C/MIP

Define immunological and genetic expression mechanisms associated with C/MIP

Define bacterial profile associations with C/MIP

Provide information on treatment response in C/MIP and factors associated with this response.
