Course Title: Innovating Dental Education and Addressing Workforce Needs in Central Appalachia: The University of Pikeville Tanner College of Dental Medicine

The Tanner College of Dental Medicine at the University of Pikeville offers a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program designed to advance an innovative, community-focused model of dental education that responds directly to the oral health needs of Kentucky and the broader Appalachian region. This presentation will highlight the College’s vision and mission, its accelerated three-year curriculum model, and the integration of emerging technologies that enhance learning and patient care. It will also examine the significant dental workforce disparities across Kentucky and how the University of Pikeville is positioned to help address these gaps by preparing practice-ready graduates committed to serving underserved populations.

Objectives:

  • Articulate the vision and mission of the Tanner College of Dental Medicine and its commitment to community impact.
  • Describe the structure and advantages of the three-year Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) curriculum model.
  • Identify key technologies shaping modern dental education and clinical practice.
  • Discuss dental workforce disparities in Kentucky and the role of dental education in addressing access to care.
