Lecture Overview:
As the general population is aging and advancements in medicine continue to improve cancer survival rates, dental professionals are increasingly encountering patients undergoing cancer treatments. This lecture will provide essential knowledge and clinical strategies to help dental providers confidently manage these patients at every stage of their treatment journey—before, during and after therapy.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lecture, participants will:
• Understand the pre-treatment dental evaluation process to minimize complications during cancer therapy.
• Learn how to manage oral health challenges in patients actively undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or surgical interventions.
• Recognize and address the long-term oral health effects of cancer treatments, including xerostomia, osteoradionecrosis and increased caries risk.
• Develop evidence-based treatment plans to optimize oral health outcomes and improve overall patient care.
Why This Topic Matters:
With an aging population and increasing cancer survival rates, general dentists will inevitably encounter many patients undergoing cancer treatments throughout their careers. Understanding how to effectively prepare, treat, and maintain these patients’ oral health is essential to providing comprehensive and compassionate dental care. This lecture equips dental providers with the confidence and expertise needed to support patients through these complex medical treatments.
