Recent increases in research on oral and systemic connection have opened more doors and opportunities for oral health care providers to play a more active role in diagnosis and management of systemic conditions with oral manifestations. Dental professionals can play a very significant role in early diagnosis and management of some major systemic diseases. The first signs and symptoms of many diseases appear in the mouth and with a proactive approach we can help with an early diagnosis. This will enable a timely start of treatment and can contribute to significant improvement in patients’ quality of life. In some rare cases it can prove to be life saving for patients.
Understanding the significance of review of systems in patient assessment is very important and often ignored. Although knowing medical history and medications are crucial, the review of system which has the most important contribution in most new diagnosis. As an oral healthcare provider, it is crucial for us to go into more detail when going through ROS. It is exciting to see the recent developments and rapid growth of dentistry but one area which still needs a lot of attention is understanding how broad the oral and systemic connection is. There is increasing evidence that oral and systemic connection is not limited to just a handful of diseases but can be linked to many systems. As oral healthcare providers, this is the right time for us to rethink our approach and claim our rightful role in overall healthcare. With change in approach and how we train the next generation of dentists, we can also significantly contribute to cutting the cost of healthcare by early diagnosis and preventing unnecessary doctors’ visits. This is an evidence-based course which will use examples and actual cases to show the role oral healthcare professionals can play in healthcare systems.
