The Foundation of the Kentucky Dental Association: Positioned to Make a Powerful Statement
We need Your Help! Please give back to your profession and your community. Members, Sponsors, Vendors, Friends of Dentistry …make a donation, today!
We, in the United States, are privileged to have the opportunity to participate in legal entities called foundations. Few other countries provide for the legal status of nonprofit organizations for the purpose of charitable work. The Foundation of the Kentucky Dental Association is the charitable arm of the Kentucky Dental Association. Established in 1998, it has a multipronged mission. Through the years the primary mission has evolved to be the promotion of dental health programs and dental education. Other prongs of the mission of the Foundation are the education of the public about dentistry, the funding of dental scholarships, supporting dental research, and supporting other organizations with similar goals.
The Foundation of the KDA was established under the guidance of Dr. James Murphy. Dr. Ted Logan has served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Foundation since its inception. At the time it was established, the Foundation’s by-laws required a representative on the board from each component. In the early days of the foundation, there were multiple fund raising activities associated with the KDA Annual Meeting. One of the initial decisions of the board was to spend only the interest gained from the funds held by the Foundation. This decision has been honored throughout the years and remains today. The primary recipient of funds throughout the years has been the Healthy Smiles/Sealants for Kentucky’s Children Project held for many years at the Kentucky State Fair and now the SmileKentucky! Statewide Education Initiative.
Fast forward to 2013…
Board members are no longer required to be from each of the components. We welcome any person who has a passion for the foundation and its charitable causes. The by-laws have undergone revision, and we now have two lay members, Kelly Dearing Smith from Louisville Water, and David Gardner from P&G Professional Oral Health. These individuals have valuable input, and we are grateful for their interest. The board has labored to establish guidelines, application forms, and evaluation forms for those applying for grant monies. We have established a detailed policy and procedure manual which describes the workings of the Foundation and the duties of the officers and board members.
We continue to have guidance from the Executive Board of the KDA with both the President and President-elect as members of the Foundation Board. In March, the board established committees to investigate fundraising and charitable causes.
During our March Annual Meeting we hosted a first-ever pre conference continuing education program titled, “Update of Dental Law and Your Responsibilities” courtesy of Mr. David Beyer, Executive Director of the Kentucky Board of Dentistry. We plan to sponsor another CE course for 2014, so be watching for details! All proceeds from this course will go through our Foundation to be donated to help support Remote Area Medical (RAM) efforts in Kentucky.
In addition, the Foundation sponsored a room giveaway raffle for the 2014 Meeting and LDS member Dr. Lawrence Gettleman was the lucky winner! We have already begun another room raffle for 2015 and details are on page __of this publication. These are easy ways to give back to your profession and your community. Why would you not take the opportunity to do something so easy?
The Foundation of the KDA is the Foundation of each and every member. The mission of the Foundation is Service, Education and Research. As I stated earlier, the primary purpose we have fulfilled to date is that of Service, but the possibilities we have are limited only by our own desires.
Obviously the size of the Foundation limits what we are able to accomplish, but again, this is a self imposed limit; the more our members get involved and donate and the more corporate donations we receive, the more our Foundation can do to help our community.
It seems futile to compete with the likes of PEW and Kellog, but who better to serve and educate our state than Kentucky Dentists? We are positioned to make a powerful statement, and in the process win the support of those we serve and educate. The Foundation needs your help to grow our corpus for the benefit of generations of Kentuckians. Working together we can make a difference!
