Mentor a Young Dentist and Change a Life

With summer and the season for vacations and time off from work upon us, we have still been very busy at the KDA. We have had several meetings addressing the various issues facing us, including mid-level providers, fee capping for non-covered services, the Board of Dentistry Regulations and Medicaid.  We still know little about what is going to happen with Medicaid, but we are staying on top of the situation, and we will contact the membership when we have any news.

The elections will soon be upon us, and it has become clear that in order to get things done in the legislature, the association and the members are going to have to pony up more money.  Some are dismayed with the process and consider it buying votes. We are not buying votes, we are buying access. I recently Googled my name and one of the items indicated I had donated to the congressional campaign of one of our local Senators. While this particular person was in office, the KDA had some issues and we were encouraged to contact our legislators. I made the call and after a few minutes on hold, the Senator came to the phone. It was only because he was also able to Google my name and see that I had made a donation, that he came to the phone.

In the last state legislative session, the Optometrist Association was able to get a great deal of their agenda passed, because they had organized and raised money for their PAC. Over the last two years their PAC contributed $400,000 to various legislators. Our KDPAC is a mere pittance compared to this and we need to pump this up.  I would encourage all to become members of our PAC.  We have also just rolled out a legislative response system supported by the ADA called CAPWIZ.  This allows the members almost instant access to our state and federal politicians. It allows the user to quickly send an email to whichever person you want.  It is easy to use and will be very effective. I would encourage all members to become familiar with CAPWIZ. Go to page six of this journal if you would like to find out more about CAPWIZ, as this issue’s feature provides helpful information about this new program.

Finally, I lost a friend and mentor in Dr. James Herbert Simpson, who passed away in June at the age of 88.  When I graduated from dental school I associated with Dr. Simpson and then bought his practice in Covington, KY.  Even though at times he was irascible, he was a kind and gentle soul, who always had the patient’s best interest in mind.  He served on the Board of Dentistry in the late sixties and was involved in the KDA.  He showed me how to run a business, how to treat people, and he took me to my first dental society meeting.  After that meeting he bought me my first Manhattan, which I choked down and decided it was the drink of old dentists. These days I appreciate a good Manhattan, so I have come to the conclusion that I am now an old dentist.

,As the KDA struggles with declining memberships, never underestimate the influence you can have on a younger dentist.  Dr. Simpson’s taking me to the meeting got me involved.  Invite someone to a meeting; introduce them to all of the things we are doing to preserve our profession, allowing them to practice in the manner they would like.  I hope everyone has a great summer and as always if there is a concern, contact me.
