What a Year, so far!

Time surely does fly when you are having fun.  I hope your year is going as well.

As I write this, our annual meeting was only a few weeks ago.  The meeting exceeded everyone’s imagination.  Kudos go out to Janet Glover, KDA convention manager; Dr. B.J. Moorhead, scientific chair; Dr. Fred Howard, convention chairman; and the Council on Annual Sessions for their planning and wisdom in moving the meeting to March.  I know, if you attended, you would echo these sentiments.  The exhibitors were pleased and the exhibit hall was actually full and we are talking about increasing the hall next year.  The large-screen TVs and the beer and pizza party in the exhibit hall on Friday evening were a big hit.  If you missed the meeting, go ahead and plan on attending next year.  The dates are March 7-10, 2013.  CE ticket sales increased 30%, which will make this one of our most profitable meetings.  What does this mean to you?  Our annual meeting is the largest non-dues revenue source for the KDA.  The profit from the annual meeting is added to our operating revenues, which allows us to keep your dues at a lower rate.  Your attendance has a direct impact on your wallet.

I would like to recognize Dr. Kevin Wall as he transitions to Immediate Past President.  I know he is thrilled with the new title.  Great job Kevin - you deserve a rest!  Except, you must help with your daughter’s wedding now.  In more ways than one, it will be a piece of cake.  I appreciate your dedication in serving as president this past year.  Your sense of humor made our long meetings tolerable.

One thing on which we have been working, and it will be implemented in January, is a monthly debit from your bank account or credit card to pay your 2013 KDA dues.  I know it will be a lot easier for me to budget $90 a month than to come up with the whole sum in December.  Please consider it and take advantage of it when the full details come out.

Mr. Porter continues to stay on top of legislative issues, along with our lobbyists.  His Friday alerts have been very informative.  Our two top issues have been our non-covered services bill and the lack of organization and payments from the MCOs.  We are still looking for a vehicle on which to get our non-covered services bill attached, so it can pass.  Believe it or not the MCOs are against non-covered services, saying this would cost them millions, even though they have no apparent stake in this battle.  Mr. Porter has recently testified concerning the MCOs; Dr. Bill Collins testified and gave the most convincing argument about the MCOs’ denial of patient care.  Needless to say, he raised a few eyebrows and a lot of questions with his whimsical mountain way.  Thanks, Bill, for your time and sticking your neck out for our profession.

There are many additional issues and items to share, but if I do it here, I will have nothing to write next time!  You will find me to be transparent this coming year.  In saying that, my biggest apprehension in assuming the presidency has to be in writing an article every other month.  I may pay Dr. John Thompson to be a ghost writer.  Most of all, I want us to have fun in what we do and be able to sit back and laugh.  As dentists, you serve the public with little recognition and are the brunt of jokes.  Let’s share some of your best stories.  I just saw a commercial where a man went belly-up when he took his dentist’s investment advice.  Imagine that, we are investment specialists!

If you have anything you would like to share, feel free to e-mail me at doc@drterrynorris.com, text me or call me at (270) 929-6068.  This is a real number, not Charlie Sheen’s dry cleaner.  If you text me, let me know who you are, please.
