Outside Our Line

Richard Pape’s article in this issue of KDA TODAY made me begin to think about all of the interesting things that so many of our members do outside of this profession.  When asked the question “What do you do?” we obligingly tend to fill in the line “dentist”, but that is not who we are.  It is the “who we are” that gave me the idea for a new column that will feature the interests and hobby’s of our members.  Our education, our constant contact with interesting people, our diversity and our access to disposable income provide us with the ability to follow passions that have no discernable connection to the practice of dentistry.  If your hobby outside the office is teeth, then you will either not read that new column or you may find that you also have an untapped passion for something that won’t go on that line with “dentist”.

If you want to see Steve Schuler or Karl Lange’s eyes light, ask them about sailing.  I can have a long conversation with Gary Smith if I even mention baseball.  You can absolutely make Bill Collins forget about RAM Projects if you mention a Hemi engine or grease.  If the last name is Ballou, there is no fish in southeastern Kentucky that does not have a near death experience to share about a close encounter with Sam, Bert or Robert.  I would like for John Mattingly to write an article on ballroom dancing.  This list could go on, but these are just a few of the interests that I am aware of and I think our membership will have a real interest in hearing about these things that stoke our souls.

When I began to write this commentary I had to look introspectively at my own hobbies and interests and it was then that I realized that I must have ADD.  My wife, Carole, chides me that when we are on vacation in South Carolina, that I don’t have enough time for my hobbies.  To make it worse, she says that I lie about my golf scores, my sailing adventures in Calibogue Sound, and how little I spend on the motor boat.   I am passionate about my Kindle reader, but most of what I read is not going to make the Oprah list.  The only thing I had left was oil painting and I decided that I would enter the Hobby Show at the KDA meeting. I took first place because I was the only entry.  At least when you exhibit your paintings, your passion as well as your talent is totally exposed for objective critique and who knows who else may be inspired to take up your interest.

Expand your circle of influence and share with our membership your interests and hobbies. We are going to try to have a regular column “Outside Our Line” as long as you are willing to provide material that we can share.  Richard Pape gave us our first writing and Melissa and I enjoyed his first draft.  All you will need to do is tell us your idea and it can be developed as an article, a story or an interview.  You do not have to be a writer.  All you need is a story and a passion for something beyond our shared profession.

I truly do enjoy writing, but the sun is shining and it is summer.  It has to be cold or raining for me to plunge my focus on to a canvas.  If I can keep from falling off my electric motorbike, I need to play golf or go sailing, therefore; this commentary is abbreviated.  Let us hear from you about how you spend your free time.  I am having a great day, I hope you are.
