I Need Your Help…

Let me start on a positive note.  Those of us who attended Dr. Johnson’s premier project, the KDA’s 150th Birthday Gala/Foundation Fundraiser experienced a real treat.  The event was planned and overseen by staff member, Melissa Nathanson and netted the Foundation a substantial sum for its charitable endeavors. I would like to commend Melissa for those outstanding efforts.  And I would like to thank those members who attended for a good cause.

Now, on a more serious note … I am concerned.

When I graduated from Dental School in 1978, the rate of participation in organized dentistry was very high.  The KDA annual meetings were packed and the profession of dentistry was largely unified.  To be asked to serve on a Council or a Committee was considered an honor.  I remember looking up to the leadership of the KDA, to our past Speakers of the House, Jim Murphy and Harold Lester, to our Secretary Treasurers Ted Logan Sr. and Jr., and a parade of past President’s who seemed to be giants among their peers.  All these individuals gave freely of their time and talents for a profession that they loved and they did their best to preserve it for the generation that would follow theirs.  Some of these individuals are still actively trying to do so.

As I contemplate my upcoming year as President, I believe that it may be necessary for our organization, the Kentucky Dental Association, to make some adjustments to better meet the needs and expectations of its membership.  “What leads me to this conclusion?”, you ask.  Let me give you some facts.  It is safe to say that overall membership across the state has been in gradual decline.  Some components have even been unable to fill their local officer’s positions because of a lack of interest or an unwillingness to serve.  Attendance at our April Annual Meeting was down this year and has been declining for a while.  All of these negative trends have reasons for occurring, but WHY?  I have my suspicions, but suspicions are not facts.

In addressing the House of Delegates, after accepting the privilege of serving as President, I promised among other things, better communication TO our membership. I failed to state an obvious addendum to that statement.  To do my job, to make any meaningful and appropriate adjustments happen, I need better communication FROM the membership.  Just as clinical decisions should be based on fact, leadership and planning should be based on fact.  And actual facts are very hard to come by.

Through this entire year, our Executive Director, Mike Porter, my Vice President, Lee Mayer, your President Elect, Kevin Wall, the Chairman of the KDA Executive Board, B.J. Moorhead and I will be reaching out to you and asking for your honest input.  What do you like about the KDA?  What really aggravates you about the KDA?  What should the KDA be doing that it is not?  What is the KDA doing that it should not? Let us know what your burning issues are.  Even if you are contemplating dropping out of the organization, let us know why. The only way that we can make the KDA fit the needs of its membership is to know these facts.

I have been told, that if a frog is placed in a pot of warm water that is slowly warmed until it is brought to a boil, that the frog will not jump out to save itself.  The KDA could be considered to be like that frog sitting in warm water at this point.  If these slowly progressing negative trends are allowed to continue, the heat is definitely being turned up.  To make a decision on how to jump out, and in what direction to jump, I’m asking for your input.  Call me anytime with your insights or with your problems.  I promise to bring them into full consideration of the association.  The KDA exists to serve its members.  How can we make our service better and tailored to your needs?

Sincerely,

John L. Creech III
