President's Message MA 2010

By the time this is published, our annual meeting and our 150th Anniversary and Gala will be a recent memory.  My hope is that everyone enjoyed the festivities and the Gala.  The Foundation wishes to thank everyone who attended for your support of our dental education initiatives.

I would also like to thank Dr. Fred Howard, the General Chairman, and Dr. Terry Norris, the Scientific Chairman and their committees for the long hours in planning, organizing, and conducting the annual meeting.  Remember all these people were volunteers.  Thanks guys.

I have enjoyed the past year as I have met with many of you during my society visits. You have reaffirmed what I already knew—we are a strong member-driven association.  Our strength is you!  When called upon, you responded.  Participating in RAM projects, becoming involved with community projects, providing leadership in local governments and school boards, contributing to your religious institutions-- these are just a few of the many ways you affect people’s lives and our communities are better for it.  I thank you for your contributions above and beyond to your patients and your communities.

During the coming year, we will be asked to participate in dental screening of children entering kindergarten or first grade.  Two years ago we, the Kentucky Dental Association, were very instrumental in passing legislation in the Kentucky legislature mandating dental screening for children entering school.  I know each of you will do your part to help get this task accomplished.  The first year is likely to be more challenging as we establish procedures, protocols, and policies but the dental health of Kentucky’s children is sure to be improved because of this.

The fate of HB 256 and HB 425 will have been determined by the time this journal is published.  During the last three months there has been much discussion by the membership concerning one of these bills, the updated Dental Practice Act.  By now I am sure each of you has studied and evaluated your individual position on the bill.  Passage or defeat, this bill has caused honest, principled debate and examination of issues.  In my opinion, that is healthy for our organization and our profession. Although HP 425, dental insurance fee capping of non-covered services, did not receive the same attention as HP 256, it was a good, fair bill for our patients.

There are so many people I wish to thank for the experiences I’ve had during my Presidency.  I thank all of you for your counsel, support and friendship during my term.  I have enjoyed my year--these past twelve months have been some of the most rewarding I have spent in organized dentistry.  I have reaffirmed my belief in our organization and our profession.  We contribute much to the welfare of the citizens of Kentucky—both through our association’s efforts to promote the welfare of our citizens and our profession, but also through what we do every day in our own communities as health care professionals and individual citizens.  There are so many of you giving on a daily basis to make our communities better places.  We have given much and have much to give.  Never underestimate your contribution and worth to our profession and to the individuals we serve.

Thank you for a wonderful and memorable year.
